Banking Beyond the Branch: Relationships

Updated: Aug 18

When most people think about their banker, they picture a desk inside a branch, maybe a stack of forms, and a handshake across the counter. But if that’s the only place you’re seeing your banker, you’re missing the best part of the relationship.

A great banking relationship exists outside the walls of the bank—in the real world, where your business and your community live and breathe.

Take Melissa Jordan, Senior Business Banking Relationship Manager at M&T Bank. I don’t just know Melissa because of an account opening or a loan application. I see her out in the community, at the events and gatherings where small business owners connect, learn, and grow.

We first Melissa at the Upstate New York MWBE Conference, where she wasn’t selling banking products—she was giving her time and expertise freely to help small businesses navigate funding opportunities and resources.

She and her partner Dan Enright, Senior Branch Manager at Rochester's Downtown Branch then invited me out to lunch just to learn more about my business JazzCast Pros LLC and to see how they can save me money on merchant services fees and support the upcoming Aligned Entrepreneur Pod-a-Thon at WXXI Studio A.

Since then, she's come on my podcast Elevating Enterprise to talk about how a solid relationship with your banker can fuel business growth and protect your cash flow.

We've seen M+T Bank at business networking events, workshops, and soon JazzCast Pros will be collaborating with them at the

M&T Bank: The Community Bank That Shows Up

This is what makes M&T Bank stand out as the community bank. Their relationship managers aren’t hiding behind desks—they’re out ringing bells for Operation Christmas Child, organizing Valentine’s card deliveries for nursing home residents, volunteering with Junior Achievement, walking in local charity events, and leading workshops for entrepreneurs.

That kind of involvement means when you sit down with your banker—whether it’s to talk cash flow, financing, or fraud protection—you’re talking to someone who truly understands your community because they’re part of it.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Business banking isn’t just about transactions—it’s about transformation. When your banker is active in your community, you benefit from:

  • Better connections – They can introduce you to the right partners, mentors, and opportunities.

  • Deeper understanding – They’ve seen your business environment firsthand.

  • Trusted guidance – They know your challenges and can recommend solutions that fit your reality.

If you only see your banker when you need a signature or a statement, it’s time to change that. Show up where they are, invite them into your business world, and watch what happens when your financial partner becomes your community partner.

Because when you have a relationship with your account manager, they're not just behind the counter—they’re right there next to you, helping your business thrive in the real world.

The Point Is: Your Banker Should Be Where You Are

M+T's presence in the community is more than goodwill—it’s strategy.

When your banker shows up at:

  • Small business resource fairs

  • Supplier diversity events

  • Local showcases and markets

  • Charity drives and volunteer projects

…they’re not just networking.

They’re learning about your industry, your challenges, and your wins. They’re building trust and showing you, they’re invested in your success—not just in your deposits.

So the question is, who are you trusting with YOUR money?
