Hi, I’m Derria, host of Declutter Empress Radio. As a decluttering coach and advocate for cultural connection, I help people create functional, personal spaces that honor their heritage while promoting peace and wellness. Decluttering isn’t just about organizing; it’s about embracing your story and transforming your home into a sanctuary.

Key Takeaways

  • Embrace decluttering as a way to connect with and honor your cultural heritage while creating a functional and personal space.

  • Sentimental items play a vital role in storytelling and preserving Black history and heritage.

  • During the winter months, focus on wellness and mental health by transforming your home into a nurturing sanctuary.

🏡 Embracing Decluttering as Self-Care

For many of us, decluttering feels like a battle between the need for space and the sentimental value we attach to our belongings. Growing up, I learned that our possessions often tell deeper stories—ones tied to our culture, our history, and even our resilience.

On the latest episode of Declutter Empress Radio, I invite you to rethink what it means to declutter, especially during the winter months when our homes become sanctuaries from the cold.

In Black culture, there’s a unique relationship with the things we keep. Our history has taught us to hold on tightly because, for generations, we weren’t allowed to have much at all. Decluttering, then, isn’t about emptying our spaces; it’s about curating them. It’s about making intentional choices that honor our heritage while creating room for peace and wellness.

🎨 Decluttering with Heart and Heritage

I’ll never forget the funky orange living room set my parents had when I was growing up. It wasn’t just furniture; it was a symbol of pride and family connection. Those memories shaped my understanding of decluttering—it’s not about stripping things down to bare walls. It’s about keeping the things that tell your story while letting go of what no longer serves you.

💡 For Black women especially, our possessions often carry stories of triumph, love, and endurance. Whether it’s your grandmother’s quilt or a collection of photo albums, these items connect us to our roots and remind us of the beauty in our history. Decluttering with cultural connection allows us to preserve these treasures while transforming our spaces into something functional and personal.

And the best part? You don’t need to buy anything new. Repurpose what you already have to design a space that feels uniquely yours.

"Your space tells a lot about who you are. Design it for how you want to feel." - Derria Murphy, Declutter Empress

Whether you need calm, joy, or inspiration, your home should reflect that intention.

🛋️ And yes, sometimes letting go of items is part of the process. But it doesn’t have to mean losing the memories tied to them. Honor what they’ve meant to you, and release them with gratitude.
